No substitute for good network design

Damovo recently surveyed 100 IT directors from large UK organisations regarding how they were approaching network planning and management. 82% of respondents revealed that they were concerned about network performance, which isn’t in itself that surprising considering that today’s organisations are increasingly reliant on their corporate networks to deliver converged voice and data services.  But what was a surprise was the continued ad-hoc approach many organisations were taking to provisioning their networks.

Over three-quarters of those surveyed revealed that they were taking an ad-hoc approach to extending or upgrading their networks. However, the reality is unless switches and bandwidth are added in a strategic and planned fashion, organisations risk compounding the performance and management issues they were trying to address in the first place.

This point was reinforced when the same IT directors were asked about the performance of their wireless networks. With many organisations looking to implement wireless networks to increase internal mobility and flexibility, 55% said that they had experienced performance problems with their wireless network. However, at the same time 57% admitted that they had deployed wireless access points as and when required, in an effort to increase or improve network coverage.

Another pressure facing IT departments is the growing number of mobile and remote workers they have to support, meaning that organisations need to scale their underlying network at the same rate as their users. However, with workers using different types of devices to access corporate networks it is becoming increasingly difficult for IT departments to push out the necessary network and software updates to their mobile workforce. This has led to nearly half of the respondents saying they had seen an increase in the number of complaints they had received from their mobile workforce regarding poor application performance.

With an increasingly complex and demanding environment, organisations need to ensure that they have an effective communications infrastructure to support their business. Damovo can provide you with a wide range of design, advice and guidance to help ensure that your networks are performing and also creating you business advantage.
